Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill is committed to operating with environmental practices and policies that are good for our customers, local businesses and residents. Our local team of environmental managers, engineers and scientists ensures that the long-term management of the landfill materials is regenerative to the planet.

Initiatives

Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. We regularly monitor and report our activities to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, and we strive to meet or exceed all state and federal regulations. All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meets all federal, state and local regulations. There are many environmental protection systems at Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill.

Water

Once trash is disposed of, it naturally decomposes and produces gas. A landfill gas management system collects gas through a series of pipes and 40 gas wells. Collected gas is routed to an on-site flare where it is safely destroyed. The Landfill’s surface and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to ensure the landfill gas system is operating properly.

The Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill team takes multiple steps to protect the environment. All waste is screened to ensure unacceptable waste is not accepted, and our standard operating procedures are designed to exceed DEQ standards.

Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill monitors groundwater safety with 10 individual groundwater monitoring wells and 2 surface water monitoring points. Each of these is tested semi-annually.

Collection

We accept waste from 4 transfer stations in Franklin and Vance Counties in North Carolina, as well as Henry and Pittsylvania Counties in Virginia.

Landfill

Waste is carefully compacted and covered daily to control wind-blown debris and odors, and create a stable engineered hill.

Recyling

Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill accepts recyclable materials at our on-site recycling convenience drop-off center.
